What do CFM and CADR rates mean?

CFM stands for Cubic Feet Per Minute.   CFM measures the volume of air in cubic feet for each minute it moves.  Austin Air’s fan CFM is 400 cfm on the highest setting and 75cfm on the lowest setting.

CADR stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate.  Austin Air does not use CADR as a performance measurement because it does not accurately measure clean air. CADR is calculated by multiplying airflow (cfm) by filtration efficiency, thus a higher cfm could mask a less efficient filter.  As an example, a unit that has a flow rate of 200cfm and a 50% efficient filter has a CADR of 100. A unit that has a flow rate of 100cfm and a filter efficiency of 100% will also have a CADR of 100.  While both machines have the same CADR, the second unit will deliver cleaner air.
