FAQ
Austin Air’s filters and proprietary 360° air intake system make us superior. Austin Air uses true medical grade HEPA filter paper, 60 square feet total, in their purifiers. We also use Activated Carbon and Zeolite (780 cubic inches to be exact) which remove chemicals, gases and odors (HealthMate, and Bedroom Machine). HealthMate Plus filter features Potassium Iodide Impregnated Carbon and Zeolite, which removes Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, benzenes, chemicals, gases and odors. Our Allergy Machine and Bedroom Machine both feature an advanced military carbon cloth (HEGA) placed inside the filter. This provides an extremely large surface area for adsorption of chemicals, gases, viruses and bacteria.
Other companies have plastic products and/or use sprayed on paint, so their products emit harmful gases. Austin Air’s products are made of steel and have a powder coat paint, which is baked on. This means that our purifiers do not off gas.
Austin Air’s products have a high-velocity airflow, which creates a clean air pocket around the user. The 360° intake system draws air into all sides of the purifier and then passes it through the filter. If you turn on an Austin Air cleaner next to a competitor’s unit, you can really feel the difference. Austin Air purifiers clean the air in most bedrooms in less than 15 minutes.
Austin Air Cleaners use energy efficient PSC motors which means that running your purifier uses less energy than some light bulbs!y.
Once you experience Austin Air cleaned air, you will agree that our products are superior.
All of our filters have the same first two stages of filter as follows:
STAGE 1 – Large Particle Pre-filter. Removes particles easily seen by the naked eye (e.g. dust, hair and pet dander)

No. Currently, we ship only in USA.
Air moves through the air purifier by means of a fan. The purifier has been specifically designed to utilize this fan to maximize the air velocity discharging from the unit and to minimize the energy the fan uses to pull air into the filter. This is done by use of a large open area in the screens through which air passes before it goes through the filter. Simply stated, air cannot come out of the unit unless it passes through the screens and the filter. If you feel air coming out of the louvre, it has passed through the filter.
There are two indications that your filter needs to be replaced:
- An unpleasant odor coming from the unit means that the carbon in the filter is full and the filter needs to be replaced, and
- Significantly reduced airflow coming from the unit means that the HEPA filter is full and the filter needs to be replaced.

Yes, we currently only sell Austin Air. We own a medical practice, and we are 100% satisfied with the air filtration by Austin Air, so recommend and sell only this.
Reasons we love Austin include: 360 degrees air suction, Low/No EMF(the ones with blue light are high EMF), excellent scientific research (backed by great institutions like Johns Hopkins), great filter life, etc.
PS: More professional air purifiers may be added to our website as we test and are satisfied with their performance.
Austin Air purifiers do not remove radon gas from the air. However, radon gas does affect the airborne particles which create what are known as radon daughters. The purifiers will remove radon daughters from the air. An indoor air professional should be consulted if you believe you have radon gas in your air.
Periodic (once per month) vacuuming of the four sides of the outside screen is recommended. This is the only regular maintenance required for your purifier.
No, Austin Air purifiers do not produce ozone, ions, or negative ions. Ozone is active oxygen and can be dangerous to people’s health. This is especially true for people with respiratory problems such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis.

The amount of carbon, the carbon bed thickness, and the amount of True Medical HEPA paper in our filters allows us to achieve a pro-rated five (5) year warranty. Our filters should last for five years in a normal household setting.
The unit is designed to last a lifetime when properly maintained. All of the purifiers feature a five-year mechanical warranty. Should the unit fail outside of the warranty period, Austin has a repair program. The filter is designed to last for five years under normal residential use.
Sixty (60) square feet, much more than the competitors.
The HealthMate and Bedroom Machine contain over 780 cubic inches of activated carbon and zeolite, much more than the competitors. The HealthMate Plus contains over 780 cubic inches of Activated Carbon, Potassium Iodide Impregnated Carbon and Zeolite for the removal of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, benzenes, chemicals, gases and odors.
The purifiers use an ordinary 120 volt outlet. Maximum draw is approximately 147 watts on the high setting or 1 cent per hour, average cost.
Square footage is difficult to state because everyone’s space is different. Factors such as ceiling height, room shape, number and location of windows and doors and level of constantly incoming contaminants all have a unique effect on the amount of space that can be filtered in a given period of time.
The entire body of the air purifier is made of solid steel, which has been welded together to prevent any rattling. The paint used is powder coating, baked at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. This process eliminates any odor or off gas emissions while also enhancing the unit’s durability.
Depending on the fan setting used, the noise level ranges from less than 50 to 65 decibels, or from the sound of a whisper to the sound of a normal conversation.
No, varnish is not used to coat the motor winding.
Activated carbon is effective at removing gas molecules and odors. Activated carbon is the most common element found in military gas masks. The most common method of activating carbon is a two-stage steaming process, which enlarges the carbon’s surface pore size. This in turn produces a more accessible internal surface area, allowing for greater odor and gas adsorption.
Zeolite is a natural mineral that has the distinct capability of adsorbing certain gas molecules. Zeolite is particularly effective in adsorbing formaldehyde, ammonia and carbon monoxide.
Activated carbon and zeolite are used to remove gases, odors and chemicals. Both have properties that allow them to adsorb chemicals and gaseous materials.
CFM stands for Cubic Feet Per Minute. CFM measures the volume of air in cubic feet for each minute it moves. Austin Air’s fan CFM is 400 cfm on the highest setting and 75cfm on the lowest setting.
CADR stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate. Austin Air does not use CADR as a performance measurement because it does not accurately measure clean air. CADR is calculated by multiplying airflow (cfm) by filtration efficiency, thus a higher cfm could mask a less efficient filter. As an example, a unit that has a flow rate of 200cfm and a 50% efficient filter has a CADR of 100. A unit that has a flow rate of 100cfm and a filter efficiency of 100% will also have a CADR of 100. While both machines have the same CADR, the second unit will deliver cleaner air.
The HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arresting) filter was developed by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission to filter out sub-micron particles. All true medical grade HEPA is laser-tested and must remove a minimum of 99.97% of all particulate matter greater in size 0.3 microns. Austin Air’s HEPA filters also remove 95% of all particles larger than 0.1 microns. All Austin Air purifiers feature true medical grade HEPA filters.
HEGA (High Efficiency Gas Arrestance) is a term that is unique to Austin Air. A HEGA filter is a military carbon cloth filter medium that is featured in our Allergy Machine and Bedroom Machine.
Approximately 10:1 (10 parts activated carbon, 1 part zeolite).
Approximately 10:1:1 (10 parts activated carbon, 1 part potassium iodide impregnated carbon, 1 part zeolite)
True medical grade HEPA paper, carbon, steel, a 360° intake and a directional export vent.
It can be placed anywhere in a room, including corners, but must be at least four (4) inches from the wall to give consistent effective results. The air cleaner should be placed in the bedroom at night with the door closed in order to produce the best personal results. The best room in the house to use a single machine is the bedroom.
Both ends of the filter have a rubber sealing gasket going around it. Because the filter is inserted while the machine is upside down, the end of the filter labeled “top/motor side” is placed label side down into the unit. To ensure correct placement, one gasket is very close to the inner edge of the end cap, and the other is closer to the center. The end with the gasket that is closer to the center is the end that goes in farthest from the motor.
If your purifier was manufactured prior to 1996, you can only replace your filter with an Allergy Machine filter. If your purifier was manufactured in 1996 or later, you can replace your filter with any filter type: Allergy Machine, HealthMate, HealthMate Plus or Bedroom Machine.
Austin researched this question extensively. They have not found that there is enough value added to the purifier or to the purifier users to justify the cost of adding such an indicator. To summarize our research:
- A simple timer could be used that would track the length of time the unit has been operating. A light would turn on after a given length of time. Some of our competitors provide this type of mechanism in their units. This is the least costly and least complicated indicator method. However, it doesn’t truly measure the life of the filter.
- An indicator which measures the pressure drop of the filter could be added. The higher the pressure drop, it is assumed the dirtier the filter. This indicator type is more costly than the first option. The issue with this type of indicator is that the carbon used in our filters is normally used up long before the pressure-drop level is reached. Thus, our filter would need to be replaced before the indicator light is activated.
- An indicator could be developed which measures the vapor phase pollution level of the air exiting the unit. This indicator type would be very costly to develop and it would unjustifiably burden the user of the unit.
Using an Austin Air purifier in an area that has increased levels of airborne pollutants may cause a filter to be replaced in less than five years. Indoor areas with many pets, new carpeting, paint fumes, heavy smoking, urban pollution, photo studio, etc. all can diminish a filter’s life.
